Dress Code gone Wild

Dress Code gone Wild

by Christian R. Kern

Dress Code has been around school since the 1990s til today. Dress Code is a code saying all students and teachers must obey all the rules and what he or she wears. Dress Code has its ups and down and many feel that the dress code is not a bad thing but mostly good saying that your in school dress appropriate not like a dirty girl.

Girls say dress code is a nightmare and a relief. Its a nightmare because girls like to dress like weirdo and think they cant be seen and have guys on there rear flirting or doing more things with them.
Its a relief too for girls because many think girls want to look like dorks and make themselves look ugly. Maria Hernandez Serra senior says " Girls should listen to it to look descent and not like a Deva." many students believe that this Dress Code can help make fools of themselves in school and make the school not that trashy.

The Dress Code for guys is not that bad to females. though females, girls, or women think we have in easy but they are mistaken. many guys do hate the dress code because today many guys love to sag there pants and show there underwear. Its not a pretty picture to see but many think it makes them look cool.
Many guys, are with it because many shirts now are not so great so its like they choose the right clothes. Also guys don't wear gang clothes or make themselves look like idiots or worse. its not like there gonna impress a girl. Kaitlin Lytle answers " Ewe!, guys shouldn't show there butts its not even hot or sexy so I gave them a thumbs down."
in conclusion Dress Code has its ups and down and should be followed with respect and not with hatred. Many have their own opinion so take a stand and tell ASB or the Administration . If not then just didn't get caught and try not to make a scene with either boy or girl.

NJROTC

NJROTC

Here at Serra, NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserved  Officer Training Corp.) plays a major role in the community whether its performing at pep rallies, different schools, in the parades or for competitions; they always make their presents known. On Wednesdays ROTC dresses out in their uniforms making themselves stand out from other students in the crowd.

Some people think that you join ROTC because you want to go straight to the military. Actually it doesn't work that way. Just joining won't enlist you to the military, navy, or air force. You would have to do that outside of school. Serra's NJROTC is strictly navy only. Other high schools will have different branches, such as military and air force.

Dressed in uniform with rows of ribbons and medals, senior Chris Poma, currently a Lieutenant explains "RO teaches me a lot but mostly how to be a leader. It also teaches me discipline, how to be responsible, and respectful to others.

There are a variety of groups you can join in RO. Chris explains, "There is ADT, UDT, ABDT, UBDT, Color Guard and Athletics and Academics.. I am in ADT which is the armed drill team, which has to do with spinning and performing with rifles."

Some people that aren't in RO think it's easy, all you have to do is march around and get to yell at people. When in reality it's possibly the hardest thing ever. " To me, I think PT- the marching and facing movements, bearings- and drill are the hardest part, if you do something wrong you have to do it all over again.

Even though its a lot of work for the Cadets, they get to have some fun every once in a while. "we get to go on field trips to the Mirimar Air Show and to other schools for competitions. It's a lot of fun"

ROTC is a good choice for incoming freshman and seniors. "It gives you a chance to experience new things. " chris says "being in it for all four years, my advice for them is if you actually wanna have a good time, participate and respect your higher ranks. That will make it a lot easier and more fun. If you are interested see your counselor to get more information or come to the ROTC building. Hope to see you there!

Soccer

By Osvaldo Aguilar

Since the heating summer of June 2011, a Serra student started to play soccer. He joined a YMCA team with his long ago friends. YMCA has a range of programs which include sports. Soccer is one of the sports that teen want to join.

Serra Senior and Soccer player Julian James tells us the beauty of soccer, “ When you give the scoring passes it makes you feel like a hero.”

Soccer not only helps you maintain physically fit life style. It also helps you think clearly , and concisely in school. Joel Baez explains “When it comes down to testing I could easily concentrate on what I was responding.”

Julian Jones was not a soccer pro, but as time passed his inspiration and dedication made him the player he is today. “Before I used to hit the ball with the front of my toe, now I can score from the outside of the goalie box,” he told us.

Soccer players have to be prepared for their soccer game. The only way a soccer player prepares is by attending the practices and exercising to stay ahead. “ Soccer practice makes you a better person, no matter how good you are you have to practice everyday until game day.

Jobs and Their Effects

By Osvaldo Aguilar

In the summer of 2012 many high school students started to join the work force. Some without even thinking about their school. Many of them without knowing it was going to take most of their school time and also studying time.

El Cajon valley high school student Eli Meza agrees, “Sometimes having a lot of homework really does kill me”.

Jobs not only decays physically a person out but also helps students only in life and in their necessities, Jorge Garcia Speaks, “I mainly work because I want be able to buy myself stuff and help my family out”.

Eli Tells us that at first she was lost and confused but as time went on she understood the wishes of the clients demands. “At first it was difficult to understand what people really wanted but as time passed I began to understand their needs and wants”.

Unlike Eli, Jorge has been working for a longer period as a security for some time and has understand his job he explains. “When I firs started it wasn’t very difficult and as time passed it really hasn’t changed it’s been the same since”.

Sometimes jobs really do take time away but it is really a need for our lives as teens. Jobs and education are two very important factors but also very opposite for some people. It may mean taking time from either school or the job but at the end it will all have to flow together. In some times it may take time to juggle with both. For some people they decide to work than to educate themselves. For others they perform both in the same time. Students often have to leave school to help support the family. This factor does happen in our country it is not just in other parts of the world. This happens in the low income families.

Relationship Madness

Relationship Madness!!!

by Christian Kern

How are relationships viewed in Serra High School? Every year there are multiple relationships around the school. teachers don't mind it but most of the school staff say its a problem.
Relationships are mostly everywhere around the school in morning, passing periods, lunch and after school. it is not really bad to be in a relationship but there are many students called whores, sluts, man whores, or pedophile, chubby chaser, and many others which is a real big problem in school.
In most problems students feel sad and do bad things to themselves to not feel that specific pain.
Its a real big problem, Serra junior  Elizabeth Foote says" I hate how students and/or my friends call me stuff and they make me feel so down and i feel so sad they don't even know it and i would like to have some help."
Many people don't care if your hurt but its a crime to not help someone in need with some guidance with relationships. But thankfully there are after school programs that can help some students in need. Unlike the girls and boys that have bad  relationships there are some that are fantastic. Serra sophomore Daeja Bell answers " My bf and I re doing well, I like him so much and i like to spend more time with him."
Some people , students, and teachers believe students shouldn't be in relationships because it can ruin their life if the female gets pregnant and/or worse. since many boys and girls have sexual intercourse many boys leave there girlfriends if they find out that they are pregnant. Some boys aren't committed like that and just want to be in a relationship for other purposes.
So if you are in a relationship follow the facts and make sure you find the right people for you . If not then its not the end of the world, just be careful. Nickolas Torres Serra Junior says" A relationship should be committed and treated with respect and not treated like dirt." If your in a relationship and think you should stay or get out, think or just be yourself.

Sneaker Heads

By Osvaldo Aguilar

In the beginning of the year of 2009 a student from Serra High School started to collect nice quality shoes as a hobby. The passion awakened for collecting different colorful, comfortable shoes.

This Serra High student explains his affection for shoes, “ I enjoy collecting shoes because I like having a pair of shoes for every outfit everyday.”

Collecting Shoes is not only a passion or a hobby but also make you feel good inside and different explains, Sweetwater High student Oliver Saenz, “ Collecting shoes gave me a unique style and characteristic.”

Serra Sophmore Oscar Aguilar always admired the difference in his cousins authentic way of sporting the shoes. “Seeing my brother and cousins wear different shoes got me interested to look cool.

Far from Oscar, Oliver collected shoes because he found them as part of his daily life. “ What inspired me to collect shoes was mainly because they were fashionable”. He explains “ I got a sense of unique style.”

Others have a variety of shoes like Oliver. Some just buy shoes to make themselves feel like part of society . Unlike Oscar, “It makes me feel like I have a different appearance in our daily life.”

After many hours of impatiently waiting in line to have the new pair Nike Petosky they finally have them in their hands. It takes a couple of hours of standing in long cold, sunny lines. Every year hundreds of new brand name shoes come from different places to make shoe fairs of the latest brands for the upcoming year. Hundreds of people and local store owners appear at the shoe fairs to decide what kind of name brands will appear for the new trends. People like Oliver don’t want to wait for the local stores to get the name styles and brands to reach to the local stores. He rather go and find his own styles before everyone else.

Work Permit

By Jonatas Gamez
October 11, 2012
When a Serra student wants to get a job they most get permission from the school office.
Students want to work for many different reasons. "it feels good to get paid because you have money on you, and you can spent it on whatever you want." said Miriam Sanchez a senior at Serra High School.

Serra Senior Yesenia Sandoval also said "I got a work permit from the school office in the counselor.” that really does not seem hard from her point of view she said “I only need to have a good GPA and need to be hired in order for the administrator to sign your paper.”

With permission a Serra student can get the job they want. “I have a job working at papas johns making pizzas.” Said Yesenia. “I work at GAP.” said Miriam Sanchez

Miriam and Yesenia have both been working since Junior Year and they both have a permit from the school. Serra high school is now proved students that they can obtain really most of what they want. The only things you need to have a signature from school is a good grade and the administrator will sign your permit.

for the students that do not know about the work permit it will be a good idea to go with the school administrator to get their own work permit and start getting their own work.

Community Service

By Osvaldo Aguilar

In the winter of January 2009, a college student not only gained experience of assisting others but also gained the affection for teens and elders in need. Community service provides students motivation to keep learning and gives the students opportunities to integrate and elaborate on their education knowledge.

Southwest student Jaqueline Dominguez explains her interest in community service, “It helps me understand the need of others”

Community service not only promotes a honorable achievement but also helps you in your daily living and understanding the potential of a person, Erick Lagunas tells us, “I got experience and knowledge by helping others accomplish their personal goals”.

Jaqueline Dominguez not only did the community service as a requirement but also improved for her future career. “I do community service because it helps me understand where I want to work in my future profession.”

Distant from Jaqueline, Erick performed his service as a requirement. “I did community service because it was a requirement to be able to walk for my graduation”.

Some students do it as a need and others do it as a deed , a firms Erick, “I helped out a teacher at a preschool classroom”.

An ordinary day at a community service at Stand Up for Kids, teens usually are very mellow and humble but as weeks pass they become friendly and open toward one another. They become more interactive and begin to associate with the volunteers. Stand Up for Kids is a shelter for homeless teens. Stand Up for Kids assist teens 13- 18 years old, they help provide food, clothes, as well as counseling or any other support they may need. Stand Up for Kids provides support for teens that want to return to school or any other short term career option they may have. There is also psychological aid for teens that become involved in drugs or alcohol.

TATTOOS

Tattoos

Here at Serra, I see quite a few people that have tattoos. For most people with Ink, they have a special meaning. Some adults when they see teens with tattoos they think of them being immature or trouble makers, but they aren't bad at all. Tattoos are a form of art and self expression

Serra Senior Adam Torres tells about his tattoos: "I have two at the moment.. My last name on my neck and a memorial to my uncle Tony on my right shoulder"

Tattoos aren't only a way to express yourself, but in some places around the world it's also tradition, whether family, religion, or culture. Adam agrees, both are for family. "My uncle died due to and incurable disease; my dad, cousin and I all got this tattoo for him. My last name; both of my parents have it so I wanted to get it too."

"Getting tatted, even though it hurts while you are getting it... it's addictive and I plan on getting more even though im not set on a design yet." says Adam. "Tattoos aren't for some people. Yeah they are cool but you shouldn't get them just because and if it's something you want at the moment...You should be able to cover them up. Some jobs dont even allow you to have tattoos, you always have to keep them hidden or else you'll get in trouble or even fired."

Most teenagers get their tattoos for special or important events. For example most get them for their birthdays. Adam is one of those people. "When i got my last name I was 16, I got it with my dad in Reno and I got my uncles on my 18th birthday."

Some people who have tattoos also have piercings . "Personally I like tattoos better, they are an actual form of art. Piercings are just pieces of metal stuck into your skin that you'll eventually loose. Tattoos are permanent and will stay with you forever.

Soccer is now being announced at Serra High. Many soccer players are now preparing themselves to know what they need to have to start the season.

Students like soccer because they have a lot of time playing. “I like soccer because I was raised in Mexico. There soccer is the sport that everybody plays and practice.” said Ubaldo Huerta. Having a lot of practice can help do a good job in the tryouts.

serra students need a good gpa to get in the soccer team. Julian said “I need a good grade, and by doing good in my practice I can make it to the soccer team here at serra.”he has being preparing himself.

“I play center-mid that is the position im better at.” Said ubaldo huerta students have a strong mind about what they are good at.

They also have a good strategie about how they can make the serra soccer team win all their games. Ubaldo huerta said “I think that a good strategie we can have is helping each other out.”

they can all relate in soccer very god. They help each other out on what they need help on because it makes a team work better if they know what they need to do. Planning every move helps to know what each of us need to do.

Students have now planned what they are going to be preparing themselves for in the next soccer season. Joining the soccer team can make you a better person knowing what you need to do

After School Help

After School Help

Last year students in Serra high school used to go with their teachers after school and study in the media center “library” to get good grades.

Serra students went there with their friends to study in the media center. Cristian Sanchez said “I went with my friends to study at the media center.” “we have been studying for a better grade opportunity here. “Said Paola Leon

Students say they want to get help this year. “I want to get an after school program this year.” Said Paola Leon. After school programs seem to have a good result in helping students out.

Last year I started going with my teachers to study to get better grades. Said Angela Ruiz. Serra High School students now have been watching after school program because they say is a really good technique to raise their grades. They also think is a better way they can understand more what the teacher wants to teach them.

The after school program made a good effect. Students here in Serra now have a good G.P.A. Their knowledge

Students in Serra High now are wanting another good after school program that can help them raise their grades.
Grades are one of the most important things school asks you to have more attention at and that is why students think that having an after school program can help them.

Students have another strategy in case this year they don’t get a good grade. “we can all help  each other out after school getting together at one of our house or at school. “said Angie Ruiz

NJROTC

NJROTC

In high school there are many different types of programs to be in, visual performing arts, marching or concert band, and one call NJROTC(Navy Junior Reserved Officer Training Corp).

NJROTC is a military program that started when the school was first built and still goes on today, it counts for a PE credit so many students take JROTC instead of PE. Serra Freshmen Vanessa Roldan said " ROTC is much better than PE, physical fitness just one day is great than all day in the hot sun smelling like a dog."

In JROTC students learn moral and core values that teaches them how to become a better leader, which can help with work and job relative things. It can also help with becoming a better citizen and not do something that's wrong.Serra Senior and JROTC cadet Christopher Poma says" NJROTC is a great way to learn how to be a responsible person and becoming a leader in all aspects of your life and in my years make new and outstanding friends to help me along the way." JROTC is a great program for freshmen to senior year. and can promote you if you are joining the military or some type or military program like ROTC in college or the Academy, each for all five branches in the United States.

In JROTC there are 6 teams each with a unique role in ROTC. the teams are Academics which is basic knowledge of the military, Athletics which is being physically fit and peforming physical training, next is (ABDT) Armed Basic Drill Team which is basic drill with a rifle, then there is (UBDT) Unarmed Basic Drill Team which is marching, also are the exhibition teams (ADT) and (UDT) Armed Drill Team and Unarmed Drill Team. Each team goes to a competition every year and wins trophy each year, Aliyah Hayes explains" going to competitions are real fun seeing and meeting other schools is a fun way to make friends and compete to see whos good and awesome.

ROTC is a fun program and if you want to join now just talk to your concelor and join today and you will love how this program can inspire you and much more as you grow up as a adult or joining the military remembering that you learned all this in JROTC.

Color Guard

Color Guard
by Christian Kern

Since the beginning of the school year, in band was a special class or team called Color Guard. Color Guard is a special team that connects with marching band field shows and competitions.
Serra Senior Nicole Tu explains that " Color Guard is an inspiration and is really something to try." meaning Color Guard is a choice if you would join it or not.

Serra senior Alice Gonzalez says " Color Guard looks fun but i believe that its to hard and i really match the girls ho know what they are doing." many students try out for it and some pass but some don't but it has to do with training and commitment. If help is needed then Color Guard captain Nicole Tu is there to assist the needed. Nicole has been in color guard for almost freshmen to senior year and loved it because it shows how spirited she can be.

In color Guard its mostly shown to be all female but that's not true. Serra sophomore Nebi is a boy in color guard and still is to this day, he replies" being in color guard is great and not just for girls, males can have fun and join the party." It's a really big commitment to be in  color guard because practice is a real big part of the program.
Going into color guard is a outstanding experience  to be in and many student find it interesting to watch, some say its a enjoyable feeling seeing the amazing stunts performed. Color Guard is split into 3 groups which are the sabres, rifles, and flags. Each are great performances but you have to be careful, Nicole Tu explains" It mostly happens rarely but sometimes the rifle, sabre or flag might hit you and its not bad but we have to be especially watchful when we perform so if we mess up that we don't make anyone else messes up."
In each show the color guard do one thing that amazes  students, teachers, and family around the school which is the costume. During each show there is a theme for it and color guard has to match it to make the show seem more like the theme. in La Quinta high school the Blackhawk Brigade 2010-2011 show was called the "The Way of the Ninja" .  Band Director Mr. Daren Loney created the show and so the color guard there hand to dress Ninjas.
School color guard is a fun way to epress your feelings, since color guard is like dancing with sabres, flags, and rifles. Alot of students say its a real way to show your school spirit. Nicole Tu Serra senior and Color Guard Captain said"showing your school spirit in colorguard is a real fun experience to enjoy and showing of your crazy moves can really be fun." So ask someone in band if you like to join and show how you feel about Color Guard.

LUNCH

Lunch
By Jonatas Gamez
October 11, 2012
Serra high school has changed their lunch schedule on Tuesday and Thursday. While students are in lunch they can rather go outside the classroom or go in a class with an advisory teacher.

Students hard work has been thanked from school. Serra has now given a one hour lunch to all the students. “I have an hour lunch because I have good grades.” Said Viridiana

Senior student Ana Argueta said, “ I do not have one hour lunch, but I would like to have a one hour lunch so I could have more time to be out of the class.” Students do not ever get what they want, in this case instead of going to lunch for one hour you get put on an advisory.

“Advisory class just helps me to do the work I did not finished in class.” Said Lizbeth Abad. She did not really got good grades and do the work that I did not do.

serra students are starting to raise their grades up “I need to get a good grade in all of my classes and have a good grade G.P.A.” Lizbeth says. She also said she would like to raise her grades “I want to spent spent more time with.”
